In English law, once you are sixteen years old, you have the right to have sex if you wish, provided that your partner is sixteen or over and he or she consents. It needs to be informed consent, however, not drunken or drug-induced consent. An exception to the age rule is that you cannot lawfully have sex with one of your teachers or lecturers until you are eighteen. This applies to teachers and lecturers at the school or college you yourself go to. You also have the right to decline sex at any time (say no), and to decline any activity which makes you feel uncomfortable.
Also, in English law, you have the right of access to accurate information about sex once you are sixteen years old. In practice, this usually applies to younger teenagers as well.
The law recognises the concept of sexual confidentiality. Legal action can be taken if confidential information is disclosed or misused. The professional codes of practice of doctors, nurses and other health professionals place a duty on them not to disclose information about individual patients without their consent, except in exceptional circumstances.
Exceptional situations may occur where a professional believes the health, safety or welfare of the patient or others is at grave risk. It would then be usual to counsel the person to try to get them to agree to pass information on.
In practice, however, it is not difficult to keep things absolutely confidential (without parents, teachers, priests, lovers, friends or enemies knowing) because there are many confidential advice clinics available to young people, and you are not required to reveal your identity or any personal details to the health professionals in those clinics if you do not wish to.
But on the subject of the age of sexual consent, this does differ around the world. For example in Malta it is age 12, in Argentina, Guyana, Japan and Spain it is 13, in Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia and Estonia it is 14, in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France and Greece it is 15, in Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway and England it is 16, and in more primitive cultures such as the Philippines and certain states of the USA it is 18.
And ages of sexual consent change in individual countries as time passes, as does the average age of puberty. For example in England in 1875, the age of consent was 12 and the average age of puberty was 17. Now, in England, the age of consent is 16 and the average age of puberty is 12. Plainly, in this particular case, the law is an ass.
And there are further strange anomalies in sexual law. For example, in England you are permitted to have consensual sex at the age of sixteen. But in England you are not allowed to watch sex-education videos which show you how to have sex - which show the different sexual positions in action - until you are eighteen. And there are several good, informative videos of this kind available. They are not pornography; they are sex education. An example is a DVD called The Lovers' Guide to Sexual Positions. In English Law you have to be 18 to buy or view this, yet you are allowed to have sex yourself at the age of 16. In some ways sex is similar to swimming, simultaneous equations or riding a bicycle. There are good ways of doing it and there are bad ways of doing it. A bad way of doing sex is to mix it up with alcohol. Sex and alcohol do not go together. No becomes yes, condoms get put on inside out, and the anus gets confused with the vagina. But good ways of doing sex can be learned, can be experimented with, can be practised and can be talked about. Young lovers talk to each other in a number of languages. One of these is verbal. It is good to talk. The vocabulary of sex includes words and phrases such as: "Yes," "No," "Harder," "Stop," "More of that, please," "Yes, yes, yes," "No, no, no," "Don't put it there, stupid," and "Why are you torturing me with your private agenda?"
