Lepidopteran evasion

He enjoys
Watching butterflies
Through binoculars.

Perhaps it is because
He's a mathematician.

The rickety, amateurish flight
Of a butterfly
Has nothing about it
Of calculus or precision.

It has more to do
With probability
And the vagaries
Of a multidimensional universe
Buffeting it playfully.

For a mathematician,
A butterfly is a nice change.

Today, however,
There are no butterflies to be seen.
